Smoke Alarms are law in NSW!

Landlords who refuse or fail to provide working smoke alarms in their tenanted homes are breaking the law.

The NSW Consumer, Trader and Tenancy Tribunal(CTTT):

1. Do not fine landlords
2. Make tenants attend conciliation
3. Tenants must defend their rights as though fire safety is negotiable!

If a landlord has not complied with Tenancy and Fire Safety laws regarding smoke alarms, then why does the NSW CTTT let them get away with it?

I think we should start a petition for the NSW CTTT to start treating tenants as worthy citizens of NSW, who have rights to working smoke alarms.

Conciliation sessions should not apply to smoke alarms. Fire safety is not negotiable! It is law in NSW.

If your landlord will not provide working smoke alarms and the CTTT will not enforce tenants' rights, then a petition would go a long way towards raising the importance of this issue to the general community.

The Fire and Rescue Commissioner, may also be able to assist in ensuring that the CTTT enforce the NSW smoke alarm laws which are in the NSW Residential Tenancies Act.

You have every right to expect that the CTTT protect and enforce tenants' rights to working smoke alarms!

It is not acceptable to let landlords get away with not providing smoke alarms.
